I’ll be posting a few of my favorite Vimeo finds this week. I post videos frequently that are posted to Vimeo, a seemingly more artistic version of YouTube (at the very least in regards to its user interface). I was recently researching stop motion for a project and came across this piece that was produced about two years ago, by The Theory, the multi award-winning duo of Tom Jenkins and Simon Sharp.
You may have seen this as it’s been viewed over 2 million times and won several awards including a Webby in 2012 for Best Animation. I love the idea + execution of this video project. It falls within that Toy Story vein in that it anthropomorphizes inanimate objects, in this case, a robot – and combines a very simple, empathetic story – wherein the robot “[longs] for escape from the dark confines of the office” with the live action, modern technology of Google Maps as the robot “takes a cross-country road trip to the Pacific Coast.”
It’s so simple in concept but high in quality in terms of filmmaking. You hardly notice the edits or lighting or perspectives, all of which are immaculately executed – which means, these guys really worked to make it seamless. Check it out, let me know what you think!
